52nd CHIZAI (IP) Seminar

On December 18, NEDO Silicon Valley hosted a webinar titled “Maximizing Benefits, Minimizing Risks: An IP approach to Open Source.” This event was a part of the Bay Area CHIZAI (IP) Seminar Series.

Speakers:

Keith Bergelt, CEO, Open Invention Network

Masato Endo, Group Manager, Value Chain Service and Technology Development, Technical Project Field of Advanced R&D and Engineering Company, Toyota Motor Corporation

Shane Coughlan, General Manager, OpenChain, The Linux Foundation

Yoshiro Matsuda, Ph.D. Student, Hitotsubashi University

The increasing significance of open source in software development for companies is widely acknowledged. However, this recognition comes with a parallel need for a precise understanding of open source compliance and associated risks and appropriate management. In the context of leveraging open source, there are expectations for intellectual property (IP) experts to contribute as both technical and legal specialists, guiding companies from those aspects.

In CHIZAI (IP) seminar series, we offered a two-part session on open source. Following the first session focused on technology (held on December 1), this second seminar shifted its focus to IP.

The four distinguished speakers presented on the compliance and risks associated with utilizing open source from IP perspectives and explored initiatives within the open source community aimed at mitigating risks and maximizing the associated benefits. We learned about the continuous efforts in this domain by establishing frameworks across several layers to support the safe and proper utilization of open source.

We extend heartfelt thanks to all those who attended and express our deep gratitude to our exceptional speakers!

The next CHIZAI seminar will be held in-person on January 19, 2024 in Palo Alto, CA and we will discuss "Unlocking the Hidden Value of IP Assets in Early-Stage Technology Startups". For more details and to register, please visit https://www.nedosvo.org/event.

Thank you for your generous support in 2023. Wishing you a wonderful holiday season!
